WCSD honors veterans through recognition events, lessons

Throughout the week, students, teachers and staff across Westerville City Schools have celebrated Veterans Day by honoring those who served with school displays, recognition events and other activities. School staff at several buildings welcomed veterans and families connected to the military for school-wide assemblies and class visits on Friday.

The Westerville City School District Records Commission will hold its annual meeting at 5:50 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 2023, in the Board Training Room of the district's Early Learning Center, located at 936 Eastwind Drive.

Second Saturday WOSU

Westerville families can enjoy hands-on educational activities with WOSU Classroom as part of Second Saturday Kids Day during the Columbus Arts Festival 9-11 a.m. Saturday, June 10 in front of COSI.

Julianne Schaffer, an English teacher at Westerville Central High School, Angela Zimmerman, a fourth-grade teacher at Whittier Elementary and Lowry Wisner, a third-grade teacher at Emerson Elementary have been named Westerville Education Foundation’s (WEF) May Teachers of the Month.

WCSD Treasurer/CFO Nicole Marshall presented testimony before the Ohio Senate Education Committee on May 10 on House Bill 33

Westerville City Schools Treasurer/CFO Nicole Marshall presented testimony before the Ohio Senate Education Committee on May 10 on House Bill 33, the state’s budget bill for fiscal years 2024 and 2025.

The bill includes proposals to expand eligibility for the state’s EdChoice scholarship program and continue implementation of the Fair School Funding Plan — both of which were the focus of Marshall’s testimony.

Robert Frost Cultural Night and Peace Pole

More than 200 families and students joined the Robert Frost Elementary community for the school’s first-ever Cultural Night on Thursday. City and district leaders joined the festivities during the unveiling of the school’s Peace Pole with the Westerville Sunrise Rotary.

Summer Ignite 2023

Westerville students can dive into the world of robotics and coding, learn about the ecology of Westerville, build friendship skills, design and build marble roller coasters and immerse in Greek mythology through Summer Ignite, a district-wide summer learning series created by Westerville educators and staff.

Superintendent Dr. John Kellogg

The Westerville City School District (WCSD) Board of Education on Monday approved the resignation of Superintendent Dr. John R. Kellogg, who has accepted a new Superintendent in Residence position that will work jointly with Columbus State Community College (CSCC) and the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio (ESCCO).

Kyle Guilliamssecond volunteer stint as part of Robert Frost Elementary’s Watch D.O.G.S was packed with activity.

He refereed a football game among fourth-grade boys, served as goalie during a soccer match with fifth-graders and alternated between kicking a ball with one student and joining his daughter and her friends for a game of four-square.

“It’s another adult presence — a dad — helping out and interacting with the kids,” Guilliams said. “And for those who might not have a dad at home, it’s an experience for them.” 

“I enjoy it as much as they do.” 

Robert Frost Elementary fifth-grader Emery Cashin placed second in the 25m freestyle during the 2023 Special Olympics Ohio Indoor Winter Games on March 5 at Bowling Green State University.

Cashin qualified for the state tournament in the backstroke and freestyle events. She earned a silver medal during the freestyle race with a time of 34.48 seconds. She has participated in the Special Olympics for years in swimming and basketball.

Westerville City School District’s “Parent Prep” returns to an in-person event this year after two years of a virtual format. The free workshop series provides parents and caregivers the opportunity to take sessions on various topics, including mindful parenting, healthy relationships, substance education, college and career planning and mental health and school resources. 

The Westerville City Schools Board of Education will hold a Special Meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, 2023, at the district's Early Learning Center located at 936 Eastwind Drive. The purpose of the meeting is to hold an executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The Board will enter into executive session after roll call. Executive sessions are not open to the public and no action will be taken.

The Westerville City Schools Board of Education will meet in regular session at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23 at the Early Learning Center, 936 Eastwind Drive in Westerville and in special session at 7 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Everal Barn for the annual City Council/Board of Education meeting.

Robert Frost Elementary Friendship Celebration

Students at Robert Frost Elementary spent Friday showing what it means to be a friend in their community. 

As part of a school-wide Friendship Celebration organized by Robert Frost's PTA, students worked on a variety of projects that extended messages of love, thanks and friendship beyond their school doors.
